Liverpool fans are hoping for a big signing. We always are. Usually these hopes are dismissed as a want for shiny new toys. However, with our rivals spending big this summer we have to keep up somehow. According to Ian McGarry, Liverpool are pursuing a move for Kylian Mbappe next summer.
Keeping up appearances
This summer has been a difficult one for Kopites.
Once again Liverpool have been operating on a sell-to-buy budget, a policy tightened further by the financial impact of the pandemic.
Meanwhile our rivals have been spending ludicrous sums as if the whole thing never happened.
Manchester City have signed Jack Grealish and look like moving for Harry Kane.
Furthermore we’ve seen Chelsea spend big bringing Romelu Lukaku back to the club from Inter Milan.
In addition Manchester United have signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
The Reds have signed a centre back to ease the nerves but that’s it.
Liverpool move for Kylian Mbappe
From January onwards Kylian Mbappe can negotiate with other clubs as the Frenchman will be entering the final six months of his contract.
According to Ian McGarry, Liverpool will be one of the clubs approaching Kylian Mbappe. The journalist told the Transfer Window Podcast:
“Mbappe is interested in making the move to Liverpool, something that Jurgen Klopp has a central role in, in regards to Mbappe’s respect and admiration for the German coach…
“Liverpool are pursuing and they believe they have an opportunity in which they may be able to get Mbappe for two or three years if they include a get-out clause in his contract.”
What RTK has to say
The only explanation for the Reds not moving for a forward this summer is that they have something special lined up.
Liverpool signing Mbappe would be pretty special.
The Reds are going to need to do something big to keep up with our rivals, could they finally be making that statement of intent we’ve been crying out for?
