Liverpool midfield three v Norwich unlikely to start together again

Liverpool fans will be delighted with the Reds’ opening weekend win over Norwich City. Jürgen Klopp’s side dominated the naive newly promoted side, the result never looked in doubt. Despite a promising result, we likely won’t see that Liverpool midfield three start together again in the league this season.

Norwich City 0-3 Liverpool

The Reds have a strong history against Norwich City.

We won in dramatic fashion at Carrow Road early on in Jürgen Klopp’s reign with Adam Lallana netting a late winner in a 5-4 thriller.

We’ve also seen Luis Suarez run riot against the Canaries on a number of occasions.

As a result Kopites arrived at the ground confident of another win, their side didn’t disappoint.

Diogo Jota opened the scoring after a deft (but lucky) touch from Mo Salah threaded him through.

The lead was doubled by Roberto Firmino 20 minutes into the second period with Mo grabbing another assist.

With just 15 minutes on the clock the Egyptian King netted his own, curling one past Tim Krul after the ball broke to him on the edge of the box.

Liverpool midfield lineup

The Reds started the game at Norwich with a midfield three of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Milner was deployed in a deeper lying role with his two teammates in more advanced roles.

The veteran pro performed his duties admirably and with minimal fuss – excluding a harsh yellow card in the first half.

However, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain didn’t provide the inspirational performances needed from players fighting for their place in the side.

The duo didn’t have particularly poor games but considering that neither are automatic starters we needed to see more from them.

Last time we see them

Carrow Road is likely to be and should be the last time we see that midfield three start a Premier League game this season.

The only thing preventing such an outcome is injuries.

Fabinho came on in the second half with Harvey Elliott also getting a run out.

Jordan Henderson and Thiago were both left out of the matchday squad with the pair still returning to full match fitness.

We expect at least Fabinho to start next week against Burnley whilst Thiago could also play the first hour.

The dream starting midfield of Fabinho, Hendo and Thiago is edging closer, it’s just a couple of weeks away.
