Liverpool fans have reacted to an excellent performance from Reds-linked Atletico Madrid star Saul tonight.
The midfielder was playing out-of-position at left-wingback as Atleti picked up a 2-1 win at Celta Vigo.
Saul starred out of position
Playing out of position didn’t stop Saul from having a great game as he managed to assist his team’s winner in their first game of the La Liga season.
Diego Simeone fielded a 3-5-2 formation, which he has done often enough in the last year or so.
It was a mix-match of players in different positions, with a midfield three of Geoffrey Kondogbia, Koke and Thomas Lemar, who made his name as a winger.
This meant that two more natural midfielders, Saul and Yannick Carrasco played at left- and right-wingback respectively.
Marcos Llorente joined Angel Correa up top.
Yet it worked out for “Cholo”, as his side got the win courtesy of two goals from Correa.
Correa’s brace came either side of a penalty from ex-Red Iago Aspas.
Saul assisted the second, with a beautiful driven pass into the feet of his Argentine teammate. Correa just had to touch it once before finishing nicely from just outside the box.
As well as his assist, Saul created another chance, took one shot, played six accurate long balls and made four tackles.
Saul versatility great for Liverpool but he will want midfield berth
It seems quite clear that the club have an interest in signing him.
His versatility is probably a big reason for Jurgen Klopp’s interest. We know how much the German appreciates this quality.
The Spaniard is a natural No 8, while he can also play as a No 6, at left-back, on the wing or even centre-back.
Yet the problem is, he clearly wants to play in central midfield. This could be one reason that he is open to leaving his boyhood club.
Much like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, footballers can feel under-appreciated if they are not played in what they believe to be their best position.
This could open up a chance for Liverpool to sign Saul before the window closes.
What did Liverpool fans think of Saul performance?
A number of Liverpool fans kept an eye on Saul today, while a whole host of supporters were impressed with his performance.
However, the major talking point was his being played out of position.
