Liverpool fans took to Twitter as Sergi Canos scored for Brentford on Friday. The ex-Red bagged a historic goal.
Five years after leaving Liverpool, Sergi Canos returned to the Premier League on Friday. He took on Arsenal for Brentford with a little bit of hype behind the Bees.
We wrote about it ahead of the game. Canos, who made his Premier League debut as a Liverpool substitute in 2016, has developed into a good player.
He started the game in what was an historic game for Brentford – their first in the Premier League. And on 22 minutes, Canos made it doubly historic.
The Spaniard got the ball on the corner of the box, sized up Callum Chambers and then lashed one past Bernd Leno to find the net. It was Brentford’s first Premier League goal and their first top-flight goal since 1947.
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to congratulate Canos on his moment.
Liverpool fans on Sergi Canos goal
Canos didn’t just impress with the goal – he put in a wonderful all-around game.
The 24-year-old scored, of course, and created another chance for a teammate. But it was defensively where he really shone.
Playing right wing-back, Canos won a ridiculous six tackles in the game. That was three times more than anyone else on the pitch. In fact, Arsenal only won 10 as a team.
Canos also picked up two interceptions – again, a game-high. He wasn’t dispossessed once, either.
You can’t possibly ask for more than that. Nets the all-important opener and is solid as can be at the back. It was a magnificent display from Canos.
Canos will be one to watch this season – certainly for Liverpool fans. And who knows? More displays like this and perhaps the Reds have another look.
