Brentford winger Sergi Canos makes his Premier League return today, five years after Liverpool sold him. The Spaniard finally gets to show the Reds what he can do.
Today sees Brentford make their debut as a Premier League team. Among their ranks is a Spanish winger, Sergi Canos, who played a big role in their promotion last season.
Canos scored nine goals and assisted eight in the Championship as Brentford went on to win the Play Offs. It was the standout season of his career – though, he did manage seven and seven the year before.
Now we get to see what the 24-year-old can do at Premier League level as Brentford take on Arsenal today. And Liverpool may be watching closely.
Sergi Canos at Liverpool
Canos joined Liverpool in 2013 from Barcelona’s La Masia. He came in as a highly-rated youngster and one who appeared to have a future in the first-team.
But Canos never really got his chance. It would take two years before he got his first taste of senior football, though only on loan.
Funnily enough, that was at Brentford. He played well in his spell away and returned to Liverpool before the 15/16 season ended.
Jurgen Klopp included him in his squad for the final game of that Premier League season and did hand Canos his debut. He played a few minutes against West Bromwich Albion in a 1-1- draw.
That would be it for Canos at Liverpool. They sold him to Norwich City in July 2016.
Bizarrely, the Canaries only used Canos for six games and sold him to Brentford the following January. From there, he’s made a decent career for himself in the Championship.
And now, five years after leaving Liverpool, Canos returns to the Premier League. It’ll certainly be interesting to see what the Reds passed up.
