Ex-Premier League defender David Luiz has hit back after Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher blasted Arsenal for signing him back in 2019.
Luiz had two separate stints in the English first tier.
He joined Chelsea back in 2011 before signing for PSG in 2014. He then rejoined the Blues in 2016, before moving to Arsenal on a free transfer in 2019.
The Brazilian stayed at the Emirates for two seasons and left as a free agent this summer.
He earned a reputation as a bit of a maverick due to his curly hair, ball-playing ability and proneness to a defensive error or two.
What was said?
Speaking at Sky’s The Overlap fan debate show, Reds icon Carragher was critical of Arsenal for their decision to sign Luiz and fellow ex-Chelsea Brazilian Willian.
He said: “When you’re talking about Edu as sporting director, you’re bringing David Luiz in and you’re bringing Willian in – two rejects from Chelsea. I’m just scratching my head thinking, ‘I can’t get behind this, it’s wrong, it doesn’t work’.
“Of course you’re allowed to make mistakes, but make the right mistakes.
“Why are you buying rejects from Chelsea who are over 30? And then giving them big deals and you can’t get rid of them? That’s a mistake before it’s happened. That’s just stupid.
When a fan tried to argue back, Carragher replied: “Why are you buying rejects from Chelsea who are over 30? And then giving them big deals and you can’t get rid of them? That’s a mistake before it’s happened. That’s just stupid.
“They took a load of dough out of your club and you’re left with nothing. I wouldn’t have bought Willian! And I wouldn’t have bought Luiz! They are Chelsea rejects aren’t they, they got the best out of them and then went ‘Arsenal will have them’.”
Luiz replied to this criticism in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.
When asked about Carragher’s previous comments labelling him a liability, Luiz said: “It is funny, some people talk about how to win the Premier League, but they have never won it.
“Jamie Carragher never won the Premier League.
“They talk and say, ‘This player is not right for this league’. Yet I won the league. These people have forgotten the past.”
Carragher vs Luiz: RTK Verdict
There’s nothing like a few verbal handbags in the press between ex-players of rival clubs.
Of course, as a Sky Sports pundit, it is Jamie Carragher’s job to give his opinion on things.
It is very hard to argue with his summary of Luiz. It is safe to say that his time at Arsenal didn’t work out.
Yet there is no denying that he has a decent-sized medal cabinet. On the ball, there have not been many better centre-backs in the league in the last decade.
So Luiz has a reasonable argument too. We cannot fault him for standing his ground.
We have to back our Red, though.
Many have used the Scouser’s lack of a league medal as a stick to beat him with. Fortunately, he is well able to take it.
While Carragher did not have the same on-the-ball ability as Luiz, he was a much better defender.
Ultimately, it’s only a few harmless jabs and, hopefully, this will be the end of it.
