Jamie Carragher is looking forward to the Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk partnership. He think it could be the best around.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher sees a lot to like about a Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate partnership. He can’t see many better, in fact.
Carragher was talking to the UMM YouTube channel, where he expressed his excitement for the duo to debut together.
Carragher raves about Van Dijk, Konate
“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I mean, Joe Gomez is still there, who’s had a great partnership with Van Dijk.
“But I mean, Konate looks an absolute beast. That has the potential to be the best centre-back partnership in the Premier League.
“It really does. Van Dijk is the best centre-back in the Premier League – you may have to give him a few months to get back up to speed.
“Konate, he looks like he’s got that presence. He’s certainly got the pace. It looks really spectacular.”
This is undoubtedly one of the things to watch this season. Can Van Dijk return to his best form? Can Konate fulfil his potential?
The Athletic reported in June that Jurgen Klopp sees Van Dijk and Konate as a ‘commanding’ partnership. It’s one we’ll definitely see over the coming months, then.
But it’s not the only one. We think Gomez and Konate is one to watch, too, as that should be the long-term plan.
Both are still very young but experienced enough to deliver now. Give it three or four years and they should be able to take over from Van Dijk and Joel Matip.
With them already looking great now, that duo could turn into one of the world’s best once they hit their primes. We can’t think of any that obviously compete.
So there’s a lot to get excited about at centre-back right now. And after the last year, we’re very thankful for that.
