With Liverpool kicking off their 2021/22 campaign against Norwich City tomorrow, we have decided to make three bold predictions for the Reds’ season.
It is sure to be one of the Premier League’s most unique seasons yet, with four teams realistically aiming for the title.
Manchester City will hope to retain, while Chelsea will think that they can do it after winning the Champions League last season. Manchester United will hope that Jadon Sancho and Rafa Varane will give them the push needed to do one better than their second-place finish of last campaign.
Liverpool, though, have the biggest point to prove.
A third-place finish last season was a fantastic achievement given the injuries that they suffered.
Keep everyone fit this year and they will be hoping, even expecting, to be crowned Premier League champions.
With the season’s start in mind, we have decided to come up with three bold predictions to look out for at Anfield.
Diogo Jota to win Liverpool’s golden boot
Betting against Mohamed Salah to be Liverpool’s top scorer is about as bold as it gets.
Yet Diogo Jota is on the verge of becoming a superstar in our opinion.
Injuries hampered him last campaign, but the Portugal star seemed to score every time he played.
He scored 0.73 goals per 90 in the league last season, while Salah scored 0.64.
Yes, Jota had a smaller sample size, but it is still quite the achievement.
The only issue is availability. Salah is a physical machine so will play almost every single minute, while Jota could be in and out of the team more at the start of the season.
But we believe that by Christmas, the 24-year-old will be an undroppable member of the side.
Don’t be surprised if he hits the 20 goal mark with ease.
Naby Keita to finally show why we bought him
Next on our list of bold predictions for 2021/22, we have Naby Keita proving himself as a top-class player.
Maybe we are being completely naïve by predicting that he can stay fit. It is very possible that it will get to September and he has already missed a few games with injury.
But go on, we are going bold after all.
IF the £53m man stays fit, we have no doubt at all that he will become a regular starter.
Yes, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are ahead of him in the pecking order. But the thing is, we don’t trust their fitness either.
Keita will probably start the opening game. We think that he could prove to be too good to drop.
Gomez to partner van Dijk
Lots of the talk heading into the new season is about who will play at centre-back for Liverpool.
There are no really clear options for the first game.
Are Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk ready to play after close to a year out each? Is Joel Matip fit enough? Will Jurgen Klopp abandon his settling-in phase and throw Ibou Konate straight into the side?
In the long term, van Dijk is an obvious starter. Unless his knee injury has completely ruined him, he will be possibly the team’s most key player.
But who plays with him?
Well, most fans would pick one of Matip or Konate. But we believe that by the time the season ends, Gomez will be the out-and-out first-choice.
He has come back from a serious injury in pre-season and looks as good as ever. The 24-year-old hasn’t lost a touch of pace.
If Gomez gets into the team, we don’t think he will be dropping out of it.
It is time to show the world that he is a top-level centre-back.
