Joe Gomez is loving the depth Liverpool have at centre-back. The 24-year-old says it’s what the Reds deserve.
Liverpool went into last season with three centre-backs they trusted. Fabinho could drop back there if needed but only on rare occasions and beyond that, the Reds didn’t have much but inexperienced reserve players.
That, of course, turned out to be a disaster. All three centre-backs were out for the season by the end of January and those reserve players ended up finishing the campaign as the first choice.
Things are different now. Liverpool now boast incredible depth at centre-back and according to Joe Gomez, it’s exactly what they deserve.
Joe Gomez on Liverpool’s depth
“That’s what this club deserves and that’s what we all thrive off: competition is good and it’s healthy,” Gomez told Liverpoolfc.com. “But we can all learn off one another, I think each of us is different and we’ve got top quality.
“Obviously the likes of Rhys and Nat and Ben and so on, all top players, and it’ll be good this season.
“Now it’s just to learn from each other and keep pushing each other, day in and day out.”
Liverpool now have both Virgil van Dijk and Gomez on the mend and gradually returning. You’d hope both are fully raring to go in a few months’ time.
Joel Matip is firmly back and playing without issue, while Ibrahim Konate has arrived as a huge talent. The Reds wasted no time in adding the Frenchman to boost their options both short-term and long-term.
Those are the four first-choice defenders now and Liverpool can be very comfortable with that. Assuming there’s not another historically bad injury crisis, of course.
But even if there is, Liverpool have Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams in reserve. Those two proved themselves capable of holding things together and delivering a top-four finish last season.
Altogether, it is quite incredible. From a situation last season with just three players to count on, there are at least six right now. Liverpool’s centre-back depth is something to behold.
