There is one key reason that we believe that Liverpool could sign PSV youngster Noni Madueke next week.
Fans have grown frustrated with the club’s lack of activity in this transfer window. Ibrahima Konate has been the only incoming thus far.
This is despite the Reds badly needing a central midfielder and a new attacker. Even though they have been trying to bring new recruits in, they have not done it yet with the new season just two weeks away.
So, many are worried that Liverpool won’t sign any more new players, which will greatly harm their chances of winning trophies next season.
Yet we here at RTK have been thinking. We have come to the conclusion that Liverpool might be waiting until next week to make their new attacking signing.
And we believe that that player could be Madueke.
And the reason?
Well, you may have been paying attention to this week’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers. In particular, to PSV’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool’s group stage opponents of last season, Midtjylland.
You probably saw a video online of Madueke’s 19th-minute opener, a wonderstrike from outside the box.
Well, it set the Dutch side up nicely for next week’s second leg, which they should stroll through.
And if they win that, they face one more tie to qualify for the 2021/22 Champions League group stages.
Is it starting to add up?
Liverpool may sign Madueke as soon as PSV qualify
Yes, yes, that is what we are getting at.
Champions League qualification would be huge for a side like PSV. They have not qualified for the group stages since 2016/17.
The money and exposure that they would get from being in it would be a great help to them.
So, is it possible that they want to hold onto arguably their key man in Madueke to try and ensure that they qualify?
We think so.
Liverpool want a young, pacey, inverted right-winger who is good enough to be a deputy option right now before succeeding Mo Salah in the long run. Madueke could not be more perfect for this role.
Especially when he is said to be available for just £20m.
PSV have already lost Donyell Malen, which harmed their qualification hopes. Losing Madueke as well would really dent them.
Assuming they get over Midtjylland next week, they will face either Spartak Moscow or Benfica (probably Benfica) in the final qualifying round the following week.
Maybe, just maybe, they have an agreement with Liverpool to sell Madueke once these games are over with.
We already know that the two clubs were in contact about Malen. Maybe his ex-teammate came up too.
We also know that Liverpool are good at keeping things under wraps when they want to.
Is it just us or does it all make perfect sense? The reason that they haven’t signed anyone is because they want Madueke, but they cannot get him until PSV’s Champions League qualification campaign is complete.
Don’t take it as a guarantee by any means, but we think that Michael Edwards could well have a little trick up his sleeve.
Much like Noni Madueke.
