Bargain Bayern signing

Last summer saw Michael Edwards’ magnum opus.

Throughout the transfer window the Reds were linked with one of the best midfielders in the world but we were persistently told that the money wasn’t there and we don’t buy players his age.

However, there was a key factor which swung the deal: the player’s contract.

Liverpool managed to sign Thiago for a steal because he had just a year remaining on his deal and Bayern didn’t want to lose him for free.

This is the type of transfer which has sustained the Reds’ business model. It works. It can work again.

Liverpool should watch Serge Gnabry

This summer sees plenty of players in Germany enter the final two years of their contract.

One such player has blossomed since his move from Arsenal to the Bundesliga.

Liverpool need to keep an eye on Serge Gnabry and his contract situation.

At the moment his deal expires in 2023, at just 26-years-old he has the best part of his career ahead of him.

We signed Thiago for a snip last summer because he was in the final year of his contract.

Should Bayern fail to negotiate an extension with the ex-Arsenal star then the Reds could swoop in.

The German giants won’t want to lose such a talented player on a free in 2023, they could be forced to do a deal.

Next summer will see Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in their 30s, they’ll need replacing.

Gnabry at 27-years-old could be the ideal heir to the throne, last season he netted 10 goals in 20 starts and 7 league appearances from the bench – he’s got the talent.

Liverpool are always looking for a bargain and Serge Gnabry could prove quite the bargain in a year’s time if he makes the key decision to not sign a new deal.
