Is Saul Niguez worth the £42m Liverpool could reportedly pay?

Just how much is Saul Niguez worth? Atletico Madrid appear to have a price in mind as Liverpool circle.

Liverpool need to figure out just what Saul Niguez is worth. That’s if they truly want him, of course.

AS claims they do, with further reports suggesting it’ll take around £42m to get him from Atletico Madrid. But that’s only one side of the story.

Goal’s Neil Jones says Liverpool likely won’t bid for the Spaniard and that’s he’s not high on their list. Should he be, though?

Just what would Saul be worth to the Reds?

Is Saul Niguez worth £42m?

There’s certainly no easy answer to this. In terms of what Liverpool need right now, though, we’d say he is.

Gini Wijnaldum’s exit leaves the Reds light in midfield. They might be able to fill gaps with someone like Harvey Elliott but that’s not exactly the same.

Even Thiago, who should be a first-choice midfielder, isn’t a like-for-like swap. He’s more of a playmaker than a box-to-box player as Wijnaldum is.

And that brings risk. Liverpool built their success on having both Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum in midfield – two do-it-all players who provided consistency and security no matter the situation.

Liverpool aren’t the same without that – they can’t play the exact same way. Saul, though, would offer an opportunity to revert to that. He’s a brilliantly versatile midfielder in his prime years and that fits the type.

He’s someone we believe Jurgen Klopp could work wonders with. The Spaniard is also suited to that left-centre midfield role, being a left-footer who has experience on the wing.

All of this matters because Liverpool’s squad is ageing. Or at least, most of the stars are moving out of their absolute prime.

Saul, then, offers an opportunity to ‘win now’ while the squad is still strong and before a rebuild needs to happen. If Liverpool don’t want to take any risks in what could be one of their final years with this group, Saul is a wonderful way to assure they have what they need.

And for us, that’s worth £42m.
