Lorenzo Pellegrini or Houssem Aouar: Liverpool reportedly spoilt for choice

Liverpool could choose from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Houssem Aouar this summer. Both players seem ideal – and are relatively cheap.

Liverpool could really do with a new midfielder this summer. Gini Wijnaldum left on a free to Paris Saint-Germain, creating a gap in the squad.

We saw how last season went. Injury after injury left Liverpool short on numbers all over the pitch. Midfield didn’t suffer like the defence did – but it certainly suffered.

All three of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago had lengthy periods out. And the thing is, that’s not unusual for any of them.

Wijnaldum was left as the only reliably fit senior midfielder and now he’s gone. Failing to sign anyone seems like more than a risk – it would be crazy.

Fortunately, we see two very exciting potential signings available. And both of them are reportedly cheap.

Lorenzo Pellegrini or Houssem Aouar for Liverpool?

We’ve written before on both players, particularly Aouar. The Mirror claimed a year ago that the Reds liked the Frenchman and ESPN believe they still do.

Importantly, they say he’d cost around £17m – a complete bargain. The Telegraph had him down as a £54m player back in September.

Aouar is someone we rate highly. We believe he fits in wonderfully well, backing up fantastic playmaking with solid defensive commitment. And having just turned 23, there’s so much more to come.

Pellegrini is slightly older at 25 but would still be a stellar signing. Similarly to Aouar, he focuses on the attacking third but is adept enough at winning tackles and interceptions.

Not to mention that he’s a natural leader as the captain of AS Roma. Liverpool can never say no to more leadership in the side.

CalcioMercato claimed a little while ago that Liverpool had interest there. It’s admittedly not the strongest source going but it does sound as though he’s available this summer.

The Athletic says £25m would get Pellegrini and that Tottenham Hotspur have him on their shortlist. Liverpool should, too – he’s a great fit for what they need right now.

Losing Wijnaldum was undoubtedly a blow but the players are there to fill the void. Both Pellegrini and Aouar would be great signings with room to improve and for relatively cheap fees.

Get one of these done and we’ll call it a successful summer.
