Opinion: Lorenzo Pellegrini move could be perfect for Liverpool

Liverpool want Lorenzo Pellegrini, according to reports. It’s a move that could be perfect for what the club needs right now.

CalcioMercato claims Liverpool are ready to pay the release clause for Lorenzo Pellegrini. He’d cost around £26m but there are a couple of catches.

Firstly, Tottenham Hotspur are also in a position to pay the clause. They’re reportedly close to appointing Paulo Fonseca, who just managed Roma for two years. He’s got an ‘in’ with Pellegrini there that Liverpool lack.

The bigger issue, though, is that Pellegrini apparently doesn’t want to leave Roma that way. If he does leave, he hopes it won’t be on the cheap with a release clause.

He’s currently negotiating with Roma over a new contract as a result. Yes, he might leave – but that £26m might not be the fee.

But talks have stalled, says the report. That plan might go up in smoke and if they can’t tie Pellegrini down with a new deal, the clause is very much in play.

And Liverpool have a great opportunity if that’s the case.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

Lorenzo Pellegrini to Liverpool?

Pellegrini might be the ideal option for Liverpool right now. They need two things, after all, and the midfielder ticks both boxes.

Firstly, the Reds will want to replace Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman leaves this summer at the end of his contract. He’s been a key part of the Liverpool side for years, though, and his exit leaves a gap.

Pellegrini is ready for that role. Not only is he entering his prime years but he’s an experienced captain. That means he can not only replace Wijnaldum’s role positionally but also as a leader.

Wijnaldum has often captained Liverpool as third or fourth-choice. His exit leaves another void in that sense.

Pellegrini fills it well and that immediate replacement allows Liverpool to comfortably push forward another title challenge next season. This squad is primed for it, after all, and keeping the number of leaders they have only helps.

And Pellegrini is still only 24. He’s going to be around when most of the current first-team is past their prime. Liverpool need that as quite a few important players are now 30 or turning 30 soon. They’ll begin to wind down but someone like Pellegrini could carry into – and lead – the next great Liverpool team.

Potentially getting all of that for £26m is a steal. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect deal for everything Liverpool need right now.
