Juventus reportedly struggle, hand Liverpool a chance at Manuel Locatelli

Liverpool may have a chance at Manuel Locatelli – if they want it. The Italian champion is reportedly available this summer.

There’s no doubt that Liverpool could use a midfielder this summer. Gini Wijnaldum left the club for Paris Saint-Germain and that leaves the Reds even shorter than it looks.

They do have plenty of midfielders on the books – we can’t deny that. But we’d also argue that Curtis Jones is the only one without big injury doubts hanging over him.

All three of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago had spells out last season. They’re the presumed first-choice trio.

Both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have struggled badly with problems over the last few years. There is James Milner but he’s now 35.

Wijnaldum was the only senior midfielder who stayed fit last season. His loss is a scary one as the Reds try to bounce back from their injury wores.

So with all that in mind, Liverpool will surely enter the transfer market. And we think one player stands out as a potential option.

Manuel Locatelli to Liverpool?

We haven’t seen any strong links between Liverpool and Manuel Locatelli. That surprises us, however, as he’s undoubtedly a very exciting player.

He’s just won Euro 2020 with Italy but Locatelli had already caught the eye with Sassuolo last season. He’s an all-action player and at just 23, his potential seems huge.

There don’t seem to be many better midfielders available right now. In fact, Liverpool appear to be struggling to find the right player for the right price.

Locatelli, though, is available for a good price. Fabrizio Romano says Sassuolo would accept around £34m for the player.

Arsenal would apparently pay that but Locatelli wants to go to Juventus. Only, the Old Lady cannot afford to pay that much. They’re only offering an initial loan with a £25m obligation down the road.

Liverpool could surely afford that £34m – but they might not even have to do that. Gianluca Di Marzio says Sassuolo have their replacement for Locatelli in mind and it’s Marko Grujic.

We think there’s an obvious swap-deal there. Not a one-for-one swap, of course, but enough to lower Locatelli’s fee significantly. Sassuolo want to give money up for Grujic anyway, after all.

To us, this makes complete sense. Locatelli is a wonderful young player who Liverpool could use. And as other clubs struggle to get it done, the chance is there for the Reds to take over.
