Liverpool should use Sassuolo’s interest in Marko Grujic to sign their midfield star Manuel Locatelli this summer.
Locatelli is wanted by numerous clubs after an excellent season in Serie A was followed by his burst onto the world stage at Euro 2020.
According to reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Sassuolo have opened negotiations with Liverpool to sign Grujic as Locatelli’s replacement whenever he leaves.
Liverpool are hoping to sell the Serbian in order to fund a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum. They clearly do not believe that Grujic is good enough to make the step up himself.
They have been linked with a host of midfielders thus far this summer. However, for some reason, Locatelli has not been one of them.
He has been linked with Arsenal, but Fabrizio Romano reports that the player himself prefers a move to Juventus.
But we think that Liverpool should just offer Grujic plus cash to sign the Italian star themselves, thus killing two birds with one stone.
Locatelli and Grujic swap makes sense for all parties
Locatelli would be the perfect replacement for Wijnaldum at Liverpool.
He is just 23-years-old but plays like someone with years of experience.
He is solid defensively, excellent on the ball and tactically versatile. While he played as a No 6 for Sassuolo last season, he was outstanding as a No 8 for Italy at the Euros.
He has all of the qualities that Jurgen Klopp loved in Wijnaldum,
The only issue we can see is convincing the player to choose Liverpool over Juventus. He is a self-confessed fan of the Old Lady and clearly dreams of playing there someday.
Yet the Turin side have been slow in their negotiations. We are not certain that they can afford to sign him this summer.
If Liverpool, a top club coached by the best manager in the world, went hard for him, would he be able to turn them down?
In RTK’s opinion, the least the Reds can do is make an offer. Perhaps something like Grujic plus £20m.
The club would sort their midfield issue for a small fee plus get rid of someone they don’t want at the club anyway.
