Liverpool gave us all good news on three injuries ahead of pre-season training. The Reds announced their squad for a trip to Austria.
Liverpool got what they wanted over three injuries for pre-season, it seems. All three of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez will feature.
The trio makes the Reds’ squad, as announced on Friday. None of them have played for some time, of course.
Van Dijk picked up his injury all the way back in October against Everton. It was a turning point for Liverpool’s season and one they arguably never recovered from.
Though it was Gomez’s injury that truly wrecked the season. We haven’t seen him since November when he required surgery after training with England.
Liverpool now didn’t have either of their first-choice centre-backs and relied on Matip to stay fit. Unfortunately, the Cameroonian couldn’t.
Matip was ruled out for the season by the end of January, leaving Liverpool in crisis. The big worry, then, was that the crisis may carry over into next season.
After all, all three suffered awful injuries that required surgery. There was no guarantee against setbacks or year-long recovery needs.
Liverpool boost over pre-season injuries
But with the three of them in the pre-season squad, we can assume things have gone excellently – all things considered. We might not see them playing right away but by the end of pre-season? It seems likely.
And that means they should be fit for the start of the season. We imagine Jurgen Klopp will want to be careful with all of them but he should still find himself in the opposite position of last season.
The boss will have, along with Ibrahima Konate, four elite centre-backs to choose from. That’s a magnificent situation to be in.
So this is a real boost. One of them being back for pre-season would have been good. Two would have been great. All three, though, is a best-case scenario come true.
