Liverpool are in need of a midfielder this summer. Jürgen Klopp has lost Gini Wijnaldum to PSG and he’ll need replacing urgently. There could be a bargain opportunity in Spain. Liverpool should consider a sly move for Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona.
Frenkie de Jong story
Versatile middle man Frenkie de Jong came through the youth ranks at Willem II.
Eventually he was snapped up by Dutch giants Ajax and he became an undroppable member of their midfield at an early age.
He was one of the standout stars of Ajax’s impressive Champions League campaign which saw the Eredivisie side defeated by Spurs in a dramatic semi-final.
That summer he moved to Barcelona in a £65m deal agreed in the winter window.
Last term he 35 league games in Ronald Koeman’s midfield, evidence of his importance to the side.
Liverpool could swoop for Frenkie de Jong
This summer there is set to be a fire sale at Barcelona.
The Athletic has reported on just how dire the financial situation is at the Camp Nou.
The Spanish side have dealt their way into a fiscal black hole and now have to make savings of around £171m before they can register new signings such as Sergio Aguero.
This could see a number of high profile sales made with one Dutch midfielder reportedly not short of suitors.
Liverpool should look at signing Frenkie de Jong for a bargain fee.
The 24-year-old has the best years of his career ahead of him and Barcelona could be forced to do a deal at an affordable price.
Given that we need to replace Gini Wijnaldum it would make sense to bring in De Jong considering how long he has left at the top level.
After years of Barcelona pillaging us for our best players it would be satisfying to return the favour.
