Houssem Aouar is available this summer, according to reports. Liverpool should likely get involved but it’ll likely take a sacrifice.
L’Equipe claims Houssem Aouar could leave Lyon this summer for as little as £25m. That’s a potential bargain for someone who could be an elite player.
We’ve written about Aouar plenty at RTK, highlighting that he’s got the all-around talent that Liverpool love in midfield. Aouar can win tackles, create chances and pop up with goals.
He does it while leaning towards the attacking third of the pitch, too, which is one area where the Reds lack elite quality in midfield. They’re solid and hard-working but lack a little creativity and flair.
The Mirror claimed last summer that Aouar was a ‘priority’ target, alongside Timo Werner. Liverpool signed neither, of course, but it showed how highly they rated the Frenchman.

Goal claimed they still liked him just a couple of months ago, in fact. That’s quite telling, given Aouar hasn’t been great this season.
There’s a reason, after all, why his price has reportedly dropped to £25m. It just hasn’t been his year.
Aouar would be a bit of a risk, then. Anyone who signs him does so knowing they’ve got to turn him around – he won’t be someone coming in at the top of his game.
Liverpool might fancy that, though. He’s still only 22, after all, and his potential is enormous. If Aouar can become an elite attacking midfielder – and he has that quality – then Liverpool are looking at a steal.
But it would likely take a sacrifice.
Houssem Aouar to Liverpool?
Liverpool will almost certainly sign a midfielder this summer. Gini Wijnaldum’s contract expires and he’ll need replacing. But any signing would have to fill that specific void.
It means Liverpool must look at solid, high-energy, disciplined midfielders. Wijnaldum has been the most reliable midfielder at the club this season and that’s what will need replacing.
Otherwise, Liverpool would be a couple of injuries away from having no midfield protection. Things could have gotten much, much worse without Wijnaldum this season.
And while the idea of a new attacking midfielder is tempting, we doubt the Reds can afford two as things stand. The Times claims money is tight enough that the Ibrahima Konate deal is in doubt, for instance.
Thus if Liverpool want Aouar, they’ll have to sell someone on to fund it. And that likely means one of the squad players, such as Naby Keita or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Is that worth it? We’re not so sure. Aouar hasn’t been thriving this season and there’s no guarantee he’ll turn it around at Anfield. You could argue it’s more likely that Keita finally clicks into place.
It depends where Liverpool see the most risk, then. But if they want Aouar, they can probably make it happen – if they’re willing to sacrifice someone, that is.
