PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has reportedly stepped in for negotiations with Kylian Mbappe in an attempt to extend his contract at the club.
The French forward’s current deal expires in summer 2022.
Negotiations between the player and sporting director Leonardo have been unsuccessful thus far.
According to L’Equipe (via Get French Get Football News), Al-Khelaifi has grown tired of waiting and now wants to take over in order to ward off interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
The outlet claims that neither side can afford to sign him this summer. However, they hope to convince Mbappe to not sign a new deal at Parc des Princes and sign him for free next year.
Al-Khelaifi seemingly has a good relationship with the 22-year-old.
He wants to ensure that Mbappe is a PSG player at the time of the 2022 World Cup.

This latest development is not good news for Liverpool.
While a move for Mbappe has been ruled out this summer, his contract status made a 2022 transfer possible.
Of course, Real Madrid will be confident that he will choose the La Liga side ahead of the Reds.
But talk of Merseyside interest refuses to disappear.
Signing a genuine superstar like Mbappe would ensure that the club is challenging at the top for years to come.
However, now that the president is stepping in, he is more likely to sign a new contract.
If anyone can convince him to extend, it is Al-Khelaifi.
