Liverpool-linked Netherlands forward Donyell Malen once again made a big impact at Euro 2020 with another assist today.
Malen had is one of Europe’s top young strikers and has been touted to join the Reds this summer.
North Macedonia 0-1 Netherlands
The Netherlands has already qualified for the knockout stages before their final group stage game against North Macedonia.
Yet Frank De Boer made just two changes to what he seemingly believes is his best starting XI.
Malen came in for Wout Weghorst, while Ryan Granvenberch, another player that has been linked to Anfield, came in for Marten De Roon.
It was a good opportunity for the manager to have a look at two of his young stars, while also fine-tuning his 3-4-2-1 formation with the other nine starters.
North Macedonia actually came closest to scoring in the opening stages, despite the Netherlands having more possession. They had one goal ruled out for offside before they hit the post a few minutes later.
However, Malen led a quick counter-attack in the 24th minute and set up Memphis Depay to finish.
The rest of the first half passed by without much incident.
However, Oranje turned it on in the second half.
They has a strong start, with Memphis squaring it for ex-Red Gini Wijnaldum to finish five minutes after the restart.
Wijanaldum bagged another before the hour after the Macedonian keeper could only palm a Depay shot into his path.
The rest of the game was a rather dull affair, with neither side with much to play for.
Malen with another assist – well-rounded forward perfect for Liverpool
Many Liverpool fans were keen to talk about recently-departed Wijnaldum and his insane goal record for his country.
Yet Donyell Malen was possibly the most impressive player in a black and orange shirt.
His pace, intelligence and general sharpness was incredibly impressive.
His assist for Depay was exactly the type of thing that we regularly see from Liverpool forwards. He looked rapid on the counter before passing to the new Barcelona signing and overlapping him.
Malen got the ball back from his teammate before playing a one-touch pass back to Depay to finish first time.
You would be forgiven for thinking that you were watching Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah striding from one end of the pitch to the other before calmly picking the perfect pass.
Malen could have had another assist in the first half when he teed up Denzel Dumfries with another fine pass.
Malen had a major impact in the third goal too. He slid a gorgeous pass into Depay, before his shot was parried out to Wijnaldum to score.
If his assist was Mane and Salah-like, this had shades of Bobby Firmino.
He was replaced after 65 minutes with the game sewn up. He could not have done much more to put himself in contention to start the last 16 game.
With every passing game, Malen looks more and more perfect for Liverpool. He would undoubtedly be a fantastic addition to the side.
Liverpool fans impressed with Malen showing
Liverpool fans were keen to get a glimpse of Malen because of the rumours linking him to the club.
Here is what some Reds had to say on Twitter.
