Malen shows why Liverpool want him with exciting Euro 2020 cameo

Donyell Malen showed the world why big clubs like Liverpool are rumoured to be after him with a brilliant cameo for Holland last night.

The Netherlands faced off against Austria in their second game of Euro 2020.

Both sides won their opening fixture in Group C so had the chance to qualify for the knockout stages with a win.

Frank de Boer’s side went 1-0 up in the 11th minute courtesy of a Memphis Depay penalty.

They dominated the rest of the half, with Gini Wijnaldum and Frenkie de Jong outstanding in midfield.

However, with still just the one goal to show for the Netherlands’ dominance, Austria started to control possession in the second half.

With just under half an hour to play, de Boer turned to his bench in order to get some fresh legs onto the pitch.

Malen came on for Wout Weghorst and made an almost immediate impact.

Three minutes later, he was sent through on goal by a tasty Memphis Depay pass.

Malen had half of the pitch to run and could easily have lost his composure.

He got as far as the penalty spot and could have hit a shot, but instead picked out Denel Dumfries to tap into an empty net.

The goal sealed a place in the last 16 for the Dutch as the game finished 2-0.

For Malen, it was a demonstration of exactly why the likes of Liverpool are said to be after him.

He showed intelligence to hold his run to avoid being called offside.

He then showed incredible pace to stride clear of the Austrian defenders.

Finally, Malen demonstrated his composure and all-important selflessness to tee up Dumfries for an easy finish.

With Liverpool needing a young forward with world-class potential, Malen’s performance will have caught the eye.

Voetball International reported before the tournament even started that the Reds were leading the race for him. These links will probably hot up now.

We knew he had potential due to his performances for PSV. He scored 19 goals and assisted eight more last season, despite only turning 22 in January.

The fact that he is able to get great assist numbers while also getting plenty of goals shows that he is perfect for Liverpool.

Last night, he showed that he can do it on the big stages.

Keep an eye on Donyell Malen throughout the rest of the Euros.
