Liverpool sign Thiago

Last summer there was a number of months when Liverpool were linked with Thiago.

Journalists kept telling us that it wouldn’t happen.

The move doesn’t make sense for Liverpool they said. FSG don’t buy players his age they told us.

Then it happened. The Reds pulled off the remarkable signing, snapping up one of the world’s best playmakers for just £20m.

The Spaniard’s first season at Liverpool was a stop start one due to injuries and COVID. However, towards the end of the season he really hit his stride, dominating games with his penetrative passing.

Cesc Fabregas on Thiago

The midfielder has divided fans and pundits. The shortsighted and narrow minded in the sport have said that he hasn’t done enough.

What people make of Thiago is often a good barometer of their footballing acuity.

Cesc Fabregas has praised Thiago and has challenged him to do something a big tournament, telling the BBC:

“Thiago, without any doubt, he has got fantastic qualities. He started very young at Barcelona, I played with him for a year.

“I think it’s time for Thiago to basically do something big in a big tournament. He has been now at the Euros, he has been at the World Cup, he never really played too much.

“So I think he needs to find a consistency to show the whole world that he really has top top level to show it at the biggest stage.”

What RTK has to say

Cesc Fabregas is right about Thiago. He is fantastic isn’t he.

However, ‘something big’ isn’t his game. He is the connector.

The midfielder isn’t often bagging huge amounts of assists. He’s finding the man who squares it for an assist himself.

He can be boss without pulling out the ‘big moment’, he’s just brilliant at a million tiny moments a game.
