Thiago left no doubt as to where he sees his best position in a new interview. The Liverpool star was happy to explain.
Thiago didn’t start wonderfully well at Liverpool. He often looked out of place, while his defending was frequently in question.
The team just didn’t look the same with him in it, which was something of a surprise. Yes, it can take time to adapt but this was Thiago – one of the world’s best midfielders.
The Spaniard is a magnificent passer but he was unable to influence Liverpool going forward. Given that’s what he was signed to do, it was a big problem.
So why the problem? Thiago believes it’s a matter of position.
Thiago on his best position
“I would say it [his ability to create] has been more limited because of a positional issue,” Thiago told L’Equipe.
“If I play number 6 instead of number 10, I’ll have less room to manoeuvre, less freedom to dribble, because I’ll have to take fewer risks.
“In the history of football, strikers have always been admired more than defenders. Because a defender can’t make a mistake, unlike the striker.
“So, for me, it’ s a question of position.”
He’s exactly right. In fact, we saw proof of this just last season. Thiago started his Liverpool career playing as a holding midfielder as both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were in defence.
Once the Brazilian returned to that ‘no.6’ role, however, Thiago could move forward. The result was a string of fantastic performances that we see as hugely promising.
Thiago just isn’t at his best when he’s the deepest midfielder and, as he says, unable to make mistakes. The team needs the 30-year-old with security behind him to allow for little attempts at magic.
We saw that last season and there’s little doubt that Thiago will have that advanced role over the next campaign. He promises to be a key player.
