In 2004 Liverpool appointed Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard enjoyed an extraordinary first season with the Reds.

He took us all the way to the Champions League final in Istanbul and pulled off the most remarkable come back in the competition’s history.

However, he eventually left by mutual consent in 2010 and a week later he was appointed as manager of Inter Milan.

Rafa Benitez Everton manager

When Everton appointed Carlo Ancelotti in December 2019 there was a sense of optimism on the blue side of the city.

This is because the Italian’s appointment was seen as something of a coup by the Toffees.

To demonstrate what his appointment meant he brought in big names like James Rodriguez and Allan.

Although he struggled in his first full season there were signs that he was on the right track.

Then it all came crumbling down: the Italian ditched the Ev and took the Real Madrid job this summer.

Since then we’ve seen a frantic search for a new gaffer unfold.

For instance at one point Nuno Espirito Santo appeared nailed on as Carlo’s successor but that didn’t last long.

The BBC are one of a number of outlets now reporting that Rafa Benitez is leading the running to take the Everton job.
