Diogo Jota was in action for Portugal in their opening Euro 2020 game today.
The Liverpool star shone in Fernando Santos’ side’s 2-0 win over Hungary in the tournament’s ‘Group of Death’.
Portugal 2-0 Hungary
Portugal were one of the favourites to win Euro 2020 heading into the tournament.
The attacking depth in their squad is second to none, while Ruben Dias’ presence ensures a solid defence as well.
However, they were drawn in Group F along with France and Germany. They simply had to win their first game against expected whipping boys Hungary.
And they did so comfortably, despite a capacity crowd in Budapest cheering on the home side.
Portugal were the better team in the first half and had by far the better chances.
Ronaldo and Jota in particular had a few decent opportunities each.
A Seleção struggled to break down the Hungarian deep block in the second half. They continued to frustrate with 10 minutes to go.
Eventually, Raphael Guerreiro broke the deadlock in the 84th minute.
Like city buses, we spent all day waiting before two came at once. Ronaldo doubled the lead two minutes later with a penalty.
Portugal then carved Hungary open with a phenomenal team goal finished by Ronaldo in injury time.
Liverpool fans keen to see Jota perform for Portugal
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota gave a rather mixed performance for his side..
Jota started on the left of the front three. He was partnered by Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva, with Bruno Fernandes in behind them.
He and Ronaldo interchanged throughout the game.
It didn’t take long for Jota to get involved. He stung the palms of ex-Red Peter Gulacsi when he could have slid his captain in after five minutes.
He also got on the end of a free-kick three minutes later, but he could only direct it over the bar.
The £41m man (BBC) had some frustrating moments in the remainder of the half but continued to work hard.
There was another good effort before half-time after a sharp turn in the box. Again, he could have possibly laid it onto a teammate, Bruno Fernandes in this occasion.
He wasn’t very involved in the aside from teeing up Fernandes for a shot on goal.
Jota does his best work in the box and he simply didn’t get the chance to play to his strengths.
He was replaced by Andre Silva with 10 minutes remaining.
The Liverpool man will be disappointed that he couldn’t get on the score sheet, but he will get more chances in the coming weeks.
What did Reds fans on Twitter think?
Like with the other Liverpool players to have featured in the Euros thus far, Kopites were tuned in to see Jota take the field for his nation.
