England 1-0 Croatia

For the first time ever, England won their opening game at the finals of the Euros.

Gareth Southgate’s side were in control throughout at Wembley.

Croatia never threatened and could’ve conceded a few in the opening 20 minutes.

Phil Foden’s curling effort struck the post in the first half whilst Kalvin Phillips had the only shot on target in the first 45.

The Leeds United midfielder pulled the strings in the middle and laid on an assist for Raheem Sterling.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

The Man City man drifted into the middle and despite not getting the best contact managed to get the ball into the back of the net.

Thereafter it was a case of game management though the result never looked in doubt.

Liverpool linked Kalvin Phillips standout for England

Back in October, The Mirror claimed Liverpool hold an interest in Kalvin Phillips.

The report said that the Reds, along with Tottenham, would be chasing the midfielder this summer.

At the time The Mirror believed that Leeds United would want £50m for their hometown boy.

Kalvin Phillips was a standout performer for England v Croatia.

He was plenty of fans’ man of the match and deservedly so.

Throughout the game he dominated the midfield with his tenacious tackling and press resistance, constantly finding his teammates with the ball.

Eventually his performance got the assist it deserved as he charged through the Croatia midfield and slid a ball into the box for Raheem Sterling to finish.

Phillips shining on the big stage showed us that he wouldn’t be out of place at Liverpool.

Given Jordan Henderson’s advancing age and persistent injury problems he could be the perfect replacement for the club captain in the coming years.
