Liverpool fans react to outstanding Wijnaldum performance

Gini Wijnaldum showed Liverpool what they will be missing with an outstanding performance for Holland against Ukraine at Euro 2020.

The Dutch captain scored the opener in an incredibly entertaining 3-2 win in Group C.

He will join PSG once his contract at Anfield expires in July.

Netherlands 3-2 Ukraine

Holland’s 3-2 victory in their opening game was undoubtedly the game of the tournament so far.

Wijnaldum opened the scoring in the 52nd minute after an entertaining but scoreless first half.

Wout Weghorst doubled the lead seven minutes later and the Dutch looked in complete control.

However, West Ham’s Andriy Yarmalenko produced a beauty of a strike from nowhere in the 75th minute.

Andriy Shevchenko’s men drew level through a Roman Yaremchuk header four minutes later.

Frank De Boer’s side were encouraged by a loud Oranje crowd in Amsterdam and re-established their lead through Denzel Dumfries with five minutes remaining.

Gini Wijnaldum was quite possibly the best player on the pitch.

He was playing the advanced midfield position that he has made his own in the national side.

The 30-year-old has developed a phenomenal scoring record for his country recently.

He looks a completely different player in orange to the one we saw in a more restricted role for so long at Liverpool.

While Wijnaldum played that role to perfection to Jurgen Klopp, his Netherlands performances in the No 10 must beg the question as to why he never got the chance to play it at Anfield.

Unfortunately, he will never get that chance as he will leave the club this summer.

He took his goal incredibly well, while he managed five shots in total. He managed less than a shot per game for Liverpool last season.

What did Liverpool Twitter think?

Liverpool fans on Twitter were very vocal about Wijnaldum’s showing tonight.

Between talk of his ability as a No 10 or general claims of how much he will be missed, Reds had lots to say.
