Liverpool should pursue a deal for Yves Bissouma after a reported transfer blow. The Reds surely won’t find a better option this summer.
Liverpool have a big decision to make this summer – how to replace Gini Wijnaldum. Broadly, there are two ways to do it.
They could take a chance on internal solutions. Maybe Curtis Jones steps up again to have a great season. This could be the season Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stay fit for the whole campaign.
It’s certainly the most cost-effective way of doing things, given it wouldn’t cost a penny. But it’s a risky one – none of those players have consistently shown Wijnaldum’s level, for varying reasons.
Perhaps Liverpool need to introduce someone new, then. A signing who, when added to the other three, can provide a decent chance of replacing the Dutchman.
Unfortunately, it appears Liverpool suffered a blow with that one.
Kicker have said that Liverpool want Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus. He’d cost around £40m thanks to a release clause.
And Bild back that all up – that’s two German sources claiming the Reds like Neuhaus.
We’re written before about how Neuhaus could fit in well with Liverpool. He’s the right kind of age, has a nice all-around game and is very available. But it probably isn’t happening.
Bild now believe Neuhaus will move to Bayern Munich next summer. The Bavarians are willing to wait and that allows the player another year with Gladbach – which he wants.
Liverpool, it seems, must look elsewhere for their prime target. Though, we think it’s a fairly obvious choice.
Yves Bissouma, transfer target
The Athletic believes Liverpool want Yves Bissouma this summer. They’d pay around £40m, too.
And perhaps that suits Liverpool better. After all, all three of Jones, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain are attack-minded options in midfield. Jurgen Klopp may want to add a defensive option to make up for the loss of Wijnaldum’s more disciplined role.
Add in the proven ability to perform in the Premier League and it’s hard to see any better option than Bissouma. We like Neuhaus and think he’d be a great signing but if he’s out of the picture, the Brighton man feels like a clear no.1 choice.
Liverpool may or may not want to sign someone to replace Wijnaldum. If they’re leaning towards doing so, though, Bissouma is surely now the player to go for.
