Liverpool are going to sign a midfielder this summer, they have to. The Reds are set to lose an integral part of the side with Gini Wijnaldum’s contract expiring. Reported Liverpool target Denis Zakaria still hasn’t signed a new contract with Borussia Monchengladbach, boosting the Reds’ pursuit.

Gini Wijnaldum departure
The Reds signed Gini Wijnaldum in 2016 and he’s become a vital part of the team since.
The Dutchman has been a mainstay of Jürgen Klopp’s midfield, playing more minutes in the middle than any other player since he signed.
It is rare to see the 30-year-old left out of the side with his durability and reliability key to the side.
Unfortunately the club have been unable to agree a contract extension with the midfielder with his deal set to expire at the end of the season.
Barcelona are expected to snap the Dutchman up on a free transfer over the summer.
Liverpool target Denis Zakaria
There are dozens of potential replacements for the midfielder.
Bild have previously linked Liverpool with a move for Denis Zakaria.
The German outlet has since claimed that the Swiss midfielder will be available for just £18m.
This is due to the midfielder’s contract expiring in 2022 and interest is high given his undeniable quality, teammate Yann Sommer compared him to Zinedine Zidane.
In the months since this report there has been no news of a new deal for the midfielder.
The Liverpool pursuit of Denis Zakaria should be buoyed by this lack of a development.
Borussia Monchengladbach won’t want to lose the 24-year-old on a free transfer next summer so they will likely do a deal at a bargain fee.
Given the tightness of funds at the moment that could be just what the Reds need.
