3 players with release clauses under £40m who Liverpool should consider

There are some very tempting release clauses reportedly available this summer. Here are three players we think Liverpool must consider.

Ibrahima Konate

We’ll start with the most obvious one – Ibrahima Konate. Just about everywhere reports on the Frenchman potentially joining Liverpool this summer.

And of all the release clauses this summer, this one feels like by far the most likely Liverpool signing. The Guardian says Konate would cost around £30m and that’s an absolute bargain.

Liverpool would get a 22-year-old with both Champions League and Bundesliga experience. A player capable of performing at the highest level already but with a long way to go with his potential.

This would be the Reds preparing for life after Virgil van Dijk. They almost certainly won’t find a better way to do so.

Sander Berge

According to Sky Sports, Sander Berge has a £35m release clause this summer. We think Liverpool should take note of that.

They will likely need a midfielder, for one, as Gini Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the season. And Berge is a player they’ve reportedly wanted before.

Berge is still only 23 and, like Konate, has experience in the Champions League. The potential is great with the Norwegian as he’s capable of developing in several different roles.

You very rarely find players this good for this cheap, especially once they have Premier League games under their belt. Liverpool might find this is an opportunity they just can’t pass up easily.

Lorenzo Pellegrini

The Mirror claims Pellegrini has a £25m release clause in his contract and it doesn’t appear AS Roma will remove it. That’s very cheap for a player this good.

Unlike the other two on this list, Pellegrini has years and years of experience in a top European league. He’s played regular Serie A football for five years now.

Pellegrini also has 17 caps for Italy and is the current captain of Roma. Liverpool just will not find a more experienced elite player for that kind of money.

This would be a way to add another leader to the midfield – something the Reds will need to do if Wijnaldum goes. It would also be a signing that brought in a player at the start of his prime.

Liverpool have had tremendous success with this. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk and several others all arrived in that 23-25 age range.

Players who have room for learning but will peak very soon.

All in all, it’s hard to see better value-for-money replacement than Pellegrini. For £25m, he’d be an absolute steal.
