Reports claim Sander Berge has fixed £35m price as Liverpool search

Sander Berge has a fixed price in his contract, according to reports. Liverpool should pay attention as their own search continues.

This comes from Sky Sports. They claim that Sander Berge can leave this summer for a fixed £35m price.

It’s the result of a release clause in his Sheffield United contract that, apparently, has always been there. The clause was £45m but the Blades’ relegation cuts it down £10m.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard about a release clause but it is the first time the price has been outright stated. And as Liverpool search for a new midfielder, this must tempt them.

That search is an important one, too. Gini Wijnaldum will likely leave at the end of his contract and that leaves a sizeable hole in midfield.

He’s been the Reds’ only reliable midfield option this season, after all. Everyone else has faced difficult problems with fitness or form – Wijnaldum, though, has been nearly ever-present.

There’s also a need to sign younger players. Wijnaldum is 30, as are Jordan Henderson and Thiago. James Milner is 35, while no one else is firmly established as a midfield option outside of Fabinho.

Liverpool must invest in their future, then, and Berge could be an option.

Sander Berge to Liverpool?

For £35m, Liverpool would get a 23-year-old midfielder with both Premier League and Champions League experience. They’d get a player capable both in defence and attack, while he’s physical enough to win midfield battles.

There’s no doubt that Berge is a really exciting talent. There’s a reason, after all, why Liverpool supposedly wanted him before he joined Sheffield United.

He’d be a natural fit on the left-side of Liverpool’s midifeld three. Berge could even play in a two, or as a more holding player. That left-sided position does seem like the best, however, as it’s also where Wijnaldum usually plays.

We wrote a few months ago that Liverpool should have their eyes on this one. Berge was always going to be available at a discount after the relegation, while the Reds need a young midfielder anyway.

Now we know the price, there’s little doubt that this is a £35m deal worth considering. Liverpool are unlikely to find a player with more potential for a reasonable fee.

But that isn’t to say it’s impossible. The Sunday World says Liverpool like Yves Bissouma for around the same price, for instance.

He’s a couple of years older but arguably an ever better fit. We’d probably lean towards Bissouma if given the choice but why put all the eggs in that basket?

In Berge, Liverpool have a player they should definitely consider.
