Liverpool are going to have to address a number of core problems in the squad this summer. The Reds have had a miserable season but thankfully the solutions are blatantly obvious: sign better and more reliable backups. With the centre of defence in most urgent need of help, Fabrizio Romano has doubled down on his claim that Liverpool are set to sign Ibrahima Konate.
Centre back crisis
This season has seen an unprecedented injury crisis ravage the Liverpool defence.
Before the season began the decision was made to sell Dejan Lovren to Zenit without replacing him.
The thinking was that the Reds could rely on the long term fitness of Virgil van Dijk and if the unthinkable happened – Joe Gomez and Joel Matip both being absent for a prolonged period – then Fabinho could step back into the defence.
What happened next nobody at the club could’ve anticipated.

In the autumn both Virgil and JoGo were ruled out for the rest of the season with Fabinho and Joel Matip also enduring stints on the sidelines.
Rhys Williams was called up from the reserves, as was Nat Phillips.
Eventually Matip was also ruled out until next season with Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies coming in to plug the gaps at the back.
Despite the signings of Kabak and Davies many fans and pundits believe that there is still work to be done ahead of next season.
Liverpool to sign Ibrahima Konate
One signing for the Reds appears to be inevitable.
Over a month ago now The Athletic reported that Liverpool are working on signing Ibrahima Konate.
The 21-year-old French centre back has played second fiddle to Dayot Upamecano at RB Leipzig but many consider the sub to be the superior prospect out of the two.
This term he has managed just seven starts and six sub appearances in the Bundesliga but he was a regular in the Champions League, starting five and making one appearance from the bench.
Fabrizio Romano appears convinced that the deal is done, doubling down on his certainty when asked for an update.
What RTK has to say
Ok….someone confirm it please.
Liverpool signing Ibrahima Konate appears an inevitability, the waiting around is killing us.
Should the Reds confirm the move then it could light a fire under Ozan Kabak for the remaining games of this season.
Although, there is the chance that we sign both of them and move on Joel Matip.
Given that Konate is, as reported by Bild, available for around £29.5m we could realistically sign him and Kabak.
