Here are our player ratings for the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg between Liverpool and Real Madrid that finished 0-0.
Jurgen Klopp took some chances with his lineup for this one, leaving Thiago and Diogo Jota on the bench for James Milner and Sadio Mane. It’s a plan that nearly worked but fell just short.
Alisson – 8
Didn’t have much to do but a wonderful second-half moment kept Liverpool in it.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7
Got some decent balls into the box but nothing killer. Did defend Vinicius Jr. much better this time around.
Nat Phillips – 8
We thought Phillips was very good. Caught for pace at one point but got away with it. Otherwise, you can’t really ask for more.
Ozan Kabak – 7
Had a shaky moment in the first half but recovered. Other than that, Kabak was decent in a big game.
Andy Robertson – 5
Ran hard but just wasn’t his creative self. These games happe.
Fabinho – 8
Played two positions and played them well. A big improvement on last week’s showing.
James Milner – 7
Klopp’s big shout for the game was Milner in for Thiago. We think it worked in allowing Liverpool to push up the pitch more. A solid game from Milner.
Gini Wijnaldum – 7
Should have scored. Aside from that miss, Wijnaldum was very good. He controlled in midfield, pressed very high and made life easier for Liverpool both forwards and backwards.
Roberto Firmino – 6
Linked play well, which was sorely missing last week. Just couldn’t quite make things happen in front of goal.
Mohamed Salah – 5
Had the chances but didn’t take them. Would have been nice if someone else stepped up, mind. Salah was the only one to regularly get into decent positions.
Sadio Mane – 5
A hit-and-miss performance. Had some fantastic moments, particularly early on, but also had some incredible frustrating ones. Still trying to find form.
Thiago – 6
Came into the game in a difficult spot as a two-man midfield. Was decent enough without really changing the game.
Diogo Jota – 5
Just didn’t really do anything after coming on, unfortunately.
Xherdan Shaqiri – N/A
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – N/A
Two things let Liverpool down in the end – a terrible first-leg performance and the forwards inability to score at Anfield. Liverpool actually played well, as reflected with our player ratings, but no one at the top end could finish, resulting in the 0-0 with Real.
A tough one to take. Liverpool had a real chance to make the semi-finals.
