Jurgen Klopp can fix Liverpool with a high-risk change to 4-2-4 against Real Madrid today. The Reds host Los Blancos as they try to overcome a 3-1 defeat.
Liverpool will not have the Anfield crowd later today. That certainly makes things tougher.
The Reds feed on the energy on European nights, leading to some sensational comebacks and dominant displays. The energy transfers to the players and seemingly makes them unstoppable.
Without the crowd, Liverpool look unlikely to overturn their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid. After all, they desperately need a high-energy, all-out display but don’t have their ‘secret’ weapon.
Which makes us wonder if Jurgen Klopp can find it another way. What if he went 4-2-4 against Real Madrid?

We actually suggested this formation ahead of the second leg. Klopp went in a different direction, however, starting Naby Keita in midfield.
In a way, it was a similar idea. The boss went with tons of energy in midfield in an attempt to overrun Real.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work.
So we think it’s time to revisit the 4-2-4 against Real Madrid, instead. It’s a way for Liverpool to go out there with a very aggressive approach despite the lack of fans.
Get players on the pitch who want to run forward with the ball. Create a plethora of attacking out-balls for quick attacks. Don’t let their defenders or holding midfielders breathe on the ball by surrounding them with pressing players.
It’s risky, of course. Liverpool would be light in midfield and overloaded up top. But risk is what you need on a night like this – take a chance on them not being able to handle you.
It also comes at a time when Real aren’t doing well for defensive injuries. They’re without Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez.
Putting four forwards on the pitch, then, could be the best way to put them under pressure and generate momentum.
Klopp needs Liverpool to be direct, aggressive and a little chaotic. Usually, he can count on the fans to provide that energy. Without them, going with a high-risk formation change may be the best substitute.
