'Truly great': Gary Lineker hands highest praise to Trent Alexander-Arnold

Gary Lineker had the highest praise for Trent Alexander-Arnold on Saturday. The Liverpool star scored a dramatic late winner against Aston Villa.

We all know Gary Lineker loves Trent Alexander-Arnold and he once again hailed the Liverpool star on Saturday.

It came after Alexander-Arnold scored a wonderful winner. With time ticking away, the Scouser picked up the ball near the edge of the box and fired one into the far corner.

Alexander-Arnold has gone through a difficult spell, of course. Left out of the England squad, he was targeted by Real Madrid in midweek.

All eyes were on him once again this weekend, then. And in truth, he didn’t play all that well going forward.

Defensively, Alexander-Arnold was fine but things wouldn’t click for him in the final third. Then the dying moments came.

The 22-year-old scored the winner, reminding all that he is in fact a game-changing full-back.

That prompted Lineker onto Twitter to give his thoughts on the Liverpool star.

“Brilliant late winner from [Alexander-Arnold],” he wrote. “The advantages of this incredibly talented young man’s play going forward far outweigh the occasional naivety in his defending.

“He does things only the truly great fullbacks in history can do. I’m sure Gareth [Southgate] will see sense.”

What RTK has to say

Lineker is absolutely right, of course. Alexander-Arnold’s attacking output has always outweighed anything defensively.

But that also shouldn’t be news to anyone – Liverpool won the Champions League and Premier League on the back of it. He’s clearly someone who offers an incredible amount.

Far more than any other full-back in the country, honestly. And that’s before we get into the fact that his defensive problems are massively overblown.

We’re absolutely thrilled for Trent. This was much-needed for him and Liverpool. They’re on the right track ahead of Real Madrid next week.
