Liverpool have been in something of a crisis this season. We haven’t had a settled starting lineup at any point with players constantly being chopped and changed. This week saw Naby Keita blow his big chance against Real Madrid and Curtis Jones must be licking his lips as a result.
Liverpool thumped in Madrid
The Reds may need to win the Champions League to qualify for next season’s competition.
As a result this week’s trip to Madrid was a massive one.
Jürgen Klopp’s men were thoroughly disappointing on the big stage, playing out one of their worst halves of football in some time.
The Reds went into halftime two goals down after some amateur defending allowed the hosts to storm into the lead.
Just before the halftime whistle the boss took the drastic decision to bring Thiago on for Naby Keita.
Naby Keita blows big chance v Real Madrid
The team sheet raised some eyebrows on Tuesday night.
The boss dropped Thiago and started Naby Keita against Real Madrid.
The Guinean made his first start in a month, his last coming in the home defeat to Fulham.
Keita looked miles off the pace in Madrid, constantly losing possession and unable to apply any useful pressure on the opposition.
His performance was disappointing and ineffective enough that Jürgen Klopp brought him off before the first 45 minutes were up.
Curtis Jones opportunity
This shocking performance from Naby Keita should hand Curtis Jones an opportunity.
The Scouser has been one of our most consistent performance this season but he’s fallen down in the pecking order since the return of Fabinho to the midfield and the return to fitness of Naby Keita.
It’s time to put the 20-year-old back in the side, he deserves more regular minutes. At least he’ll fight for the shirt.
