Rio Ferdinand tips Liverpool to make top four this season

Liverpool have had a rough few months. The Reds were ruined by injuries but kept on going until Christmas but the crisis caught up with them in the New Year. Despite the wheels coming off we’re still hopeful of a Champions League spot. Rio Ferdinand has tipped Liverpool to make the top four this season.

Top four race

Once again the Reds were top at Christmas.

This time around though there was always a lingering fear that it could fall apart at any minute due to the mountain of injuries at the club.

It did fall apart and it fell apart in style.

The Reds’ slumped to what felt like a dozen defeats in a row, sliding down the table and looking set for a mid-table finish unless something changed quickly.

Prior to the international break we managed to edge past Wolves to restore some hope of a top four finish.

This weekend saw the Reds batter Arsenal whilst Chelsea, Spurs and Leicester City all dropped points – sparking further life into the race for a Champions League spot.

Rio Ferdinand on Liverpool chances

Following an immense weekend of fixtures which saw a humiliating loss for rivals Chelsea, Rio Ferdinand weighed in on whether Liverpool could make the top four.

Speaking on BT Sport’s PL Tonight, the Manchester United legend was asked who he thinks will take the Champions League spots, he responded:

“Liverpool have a say in it, if their win over Arsenal is anything to go by – that puts them in with a shout. If I was a betting man, the teams right there now will finish there.

“Actually, I might change. I think Liverpool might get in there. That result, the confidence that will give the team – Fabinho back in midfield is huge. Liverpool have got that know how, that nous to put a string of results together.

“Out of Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, a team that can go win games back to back, Liverpool are that team.”

What RTK has to say

If Liverpool recover and finish in the top four this season then they’ve pulled off something special.

It was a disastrous couple of months we’ve just been through but we appear to be back on track.

As Rio points out, Fabinho returning to the midfield will prove vital for us.
