Nat Phillips would see his chances of a Liverpool future boosted with a potential sale. The 23-year-old is making a name for himself.
We don’t know yet where Nat Phillips has a future. It may genuinely be at Liverpool, though.
He’s playing well as a first-team centre-half, despite his incredible lack of experience. But Phillips certainly has a place right now, especially after helping secure Champions League progression against RB Leipzig.
But does he have a place long-term? That’s a tough one. He certainly isn’t a starting centre-half once Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are back.
Then he’s also behind Joel Matip, leaving him fourth-choice at best. Then what if the Reds sign someone? They have an option to buy Ozan Kabak, for instance, or perhaps they sign someone else.
There isn’t really room for a fifth-choice. Not with an expectation of first-team football.
Phillips, then, has to prove that Liverpool needn’t sign anyone. That’s a tough task, given the injury crisis this season. He’d need to show that the team is fine with him starting regularly, just in case players break down again.
A recent report, though, suggests he might have it easier.
Sale
The Sunday World suggests Liverpool could sell Joel Matip this summer. They’d do so to free up funds for signings but it’s something that would benefit Phillips.
Selling Matip means any new signing would be third-choice – which sounds more likely for a new signing. It also means there’s a fourth-choice spot available.
Phillips could settle into that role quite nicely. He isn’t injury prone, knows the playing style inside-out and is completely free.
It feels sensible. Liverpool can use Van Dijk and Gomez as their first-choice players. Then have an exciting new signing behind them to gain experience and cover injuries.

Phillips can be a reliable fourth-choice, which is what you want. Matip – although a far superior player – isn’t a great squad option as he’s rarely available.
It defeats the purpose of being squad cover when you need covering yourself.
One thing is for certain, though – if Liverpool have two free spots for centre-backs this summer, Phillip’s future at the club looks a lot brighter.
