Pote is enjoying a rapidly-growing reputation that works against any Liverpool move.
Liverpool supposedly want Pote (Pedro Goncalves). That’s according to Record in Portugal. They claim the Reds have had informal contact over the player – and it’s no secret why.
Pote exploded into life this season, playing a fluid attacking-midfield, right-wing role and scoring 15 goals in 21 games. He arrived at Sporting as a replacement for Bruno Fernandes but has moved beyond that.
He’s now the primary reason the club is one the brink of a first Liga NOS title in 20 years. And with that comes a reputation.
Pote is still just 22, after all. He’s shining, delivering a title and seemingly has plenty of room to grow.

Of course Liverpool want some of that. Even with a £51m release clause – he’s going to tempt everyone.
And there’s the problem.
Liverpool may move for Pote this summer. But they’re not going to be the only ones. While they may have made contact a while ago, the ‘secret’ is firmly out.
The Telegraph now reports that Manchester United are seriously looking at Pote, presumably to recreate the Fernandes magic.
That’s a major British outlet now catching up with Portuguese reports. This isn’t one that will go away.
And at this point, the release clause works against everyone. Originally, it seemed like a steep price. You’d be signing him off one great season in Portugal, after all.
That could have meant talking Sporting down from the release clause. Especially as they reportedly have to sell someone this summer.
Now it’s fairly cheap, given Pote’s form and the expanding competition. Someone will match the clause at this rate.
Securing the player is more difficult, then. Sporting can almost guarantee they could get the full £51m and Liverpool would have several teams to contend with.
If they truly want Pote – and we think he’d be a great signing – Liverpool must put up a fight and put up the cash. A few months ago, it would have been a lot easier on both counts.
