Liverpool have interest in Sporting’s Pote, according to reports. They should feel encouraged by the latest news, then.
O Jogo claims Sporting have to sell someone this summer. They’ve decided who, too – Nuno Mendes.
The 18-year-old is enjoying his first full senior season and thriving. Sporting top the league by some distance after 21 games.
But in order to balance the books after this campaign, Sporting have decided to sell him. That interests Liverpool, who supposedly want the full-back.
But what if Liverpool can approach this from a different angle? What if it could help secure them one of Europe’s brightest talents?
Record reported in January that Liverpool have interest in Pote. They’ve asked about the player, in fact.
Sporting, though, didn’t want to sell.
It’s no mystery why, either. Pote replaced Bruno Ferndandes this summer and exploded into life. Playing in an attacking midfield/right-wing position, the player has scored 14 goals in 19 games with two assists.
And he’s still only 22.
Pote is taking them towards their first Liga Nos title since 2002. He’s becoming a superstar.
But if Sporting have to sell, there’s a possibility Liverpool can tempt them. Why not cash in on Pote now? Keep Mendes and get a fortune.
They’ll at least listen, given they apparently need cash. At the very least, Liverpool should ask.
Pote could be the Roberto Firmino replacement they desperately need. Or maybe he’s just a phenomenal young player who could bring something special.
The original Record report had Pote’s price down as £53m. That might prove to be a bargain. He’s rolled into Bruno Fernandes’s old spot and proven he can do even more than the Manchester United man.
For that price, why not see if he can upstage him in the Premier League, too? Sporting might just listen.
