Liverpool will have to make some sweeping changes in the summer. There will hopefully be plenty of ins and outs as the club prepares to address the problems faced this season. One man is sure to leave the Reds; in a fresh twist, Fabrizio Romano has claimed Gini Wijnaldum is looking at options in the Premier League.

Wijnaldum era

When Liverpool signed Gini Wijnaldum from Newcastle United in 2016 nobody would’ve guessed he would become the player he has.

Way back then he was a goal grabbing attacking midfielder.

In the past five years he’s been transformed into a box-to-box dynamo, a man adept at winning the ball back and keeping it.

There are few in the world who can shield a ball like Gini does.

This summer sees the end of his contract at Anfield and he looks unlikely to sign a fresh deal.

The midfielder is thought to want a big pay hike, one which he deserves. However, given his age, the club don’t believe the move would represent value for money.

Fabrizio Romano on Gini Wijnaldum

Just where the midfielder will land is anybody’s guess.

One thing is for sure: he won’t be short of options.

Fabrizio Romano has discussed Gini Wijnaldum on the Here We Go podcast, telling listeners:

“There is still no agreement. The last proposal from Liverpool was at the start of December and there was no agreement with Wijnaldum.

“He is looking at other options, not only in the Premier League, but also in other countries – let’s see what happens.

“But at the moment, there is no agreement between Wijnaldum and Liverpool and when you arrive in March without an agreement – and they [have been] negotiating [for] one year because they started negotiations in February last year – it’s incredible.”

What RTK has to say

If Fabrizio Romano is right and Gini Wijnaldum is talking to Premier League clubs then it is a disaster for the Reds.

Losing the Dutchman to a division rival would be a travesty.

It would also be a move certain to damage his legacy on Merseyside.

Whilst we understand why he deserves a pay hike and why it isn’t possible, he can’t join a direct rival.

Just go to Barcelona or something mate, please. Just not Man City or Chelsea. Please.
