Liverpool are once again in the quarter finals of the Champions League. The Reds eased past RB Leipzig at the Puskas Arena, beating the Bundesliga side 2-0 in both legs. The result has led to optimism in some corners. Michael Owen believes Liverpool can win the Champions League this season.
Liverpool book place in quarters
The Reds have steadily slid down the Premier League table in recent months.
Jürgen Klopp’s side have looked a shadow of their former selves in domestic competition.
They do still, however, turn up in Europe. They were impressive in the first leg against RB Leipzig and even more impressive in the second.
In both legs Mo Salah opened the scoring with Sadio Mane doubling the lead just a few minutes later.
The second leg also saw stand out performances from Thiago, Nat Phillips and Fabinho.
Michael Owen on Liverpool in Champions League
The performance we saw in Hungary was the brightest Liverpool performance in weeks if not months.
The boss finally had Fabinho back in the middle and it made all the difference.
The win gave many fans and pundits cause for optimism.
Michael Owen believes Liverpool could win the Champions League this season, telling BT Sport:
“You can rule out certain teams in the Champions League but you can’t rule out Liverpool.
“OK form isn’t there at the moment but it was a stepping stone tonight.
“Just as quickly your form can go it can come back and there’s not many teams you can say are definitely good enough to win. Liverpool are good enough to win.”
What RTK has to say
Even with the injuries we’ve got, this is a stronger squad than the one which won the Champions League in 2005.
The last time both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi didn’t make the quarters…2005.
The Reds have every chance of going all the way as long as they keep their head screwed on, stranger things have happened for this club.
