Liverpool reportedly get their wish as Nuno Mendes put up for sale

Sporting have put Nuno Mendes up for sale, according to reports. Liverpool may just get their wish.

This comes from O Jogo. They claim that Nuno Mendes is up for sale this summer.

Sporting look likely to end a barren run in Liga Nos this year, topping the table by nine points after 21 games. They still need to balance their books, however.

That will mean selling someone. Sporting have apparently chosen Nuno Mendes, their 18-year-old left-back.

Mendes is enjoying his first full senior season. He’s started 17 Liga Nos games and played well, by all accounts.

Not that Liverpool are surprised. They wanted to sign Mendes ahead of this season.

The same O Jogo report mentions a £19m proposal, although it’s unclear if that was formal. What is clear, claims the outlet, is that Liverpool still want Mendes.

If he’s up for sale, they’ll be there.

What RTK has to say

A hugely-talented teenager up for sale on the cheap? We imagine Liverpool will like this one.

Mendes is quite possibly the dream heir for Andy Robertson. He’s the perfect age for that role, while he usually plays as a wing-back.

That’s effectively how Liverpool use their full-backs – they want them bombing up and down the wing, controlling it from front to back.

Now, is a long-term left-back really a priority? Of course, not. This will come down to how highly Liverpool rate Mendes.

We imagine it’s quite high. After all, they supposedly prepared a £19m offer before he’d even played a full season.

There’s no indication of how much Mendes would now cost, though. More than £19m, you’d think.

His release clause is £66m but if Sporting want to sell, it’ll be under that figure. Otherwise, they’d be no need to put him up for sale – pay that figure and he’s yours, regardless of their thoughts.

So still some questions on this one. But if Liverpool can justify signing Mendes, we think they might do just that.
