Liverpool have been forced into previously unthinkable changes this season. The Reds have been dragged this way and that by an unprecedented injury crisis. Somehow, Jürgen Klopp has still managed to keep us in the top four conversation. The boss has hinted that Fabinho could return to the midfield in the coming weeks.
The season got off to a torrid start when Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the campaign in October.
The centre back ruptured his ACL in the Merseyside Derby and things only got worse from then on out.
Joe Gomez was sidelined for the season a couple of weeks later.
Joel Matip was in and out of the side until January when he was ruled out until next season.
Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have filled in at the back, severely weakening the midfield as a result.
Fabinho could return to midfield
Liverpool face Chelsea this week and could lineup with a few stars returning to the fold.
Fabinho is expected back in the squad after an injury lay off.
Diogo Jota and Alisson are also expected to be involved.
At a pre-match press conference, Jürgen Klopp was asked whether Fabinho could return to the midfield soon, the boss told reporters:
“Both is possible. It’s good. It gives us options. If you can find a way to bring Fab back into midfield in some games that would be useful.”
What RTK has to say
Fabinho returning to the midfield is massively important to Liverpool.
The sooner he’s in there the sooner we’ll start strangling games again.
With him in defence we’ve not been able to pen teams into their own half as we used to.
Hopefully the boss will trust Ozan Kabak and either Ben Davies or Nat Phillips enough to see Fab back in the middle.
