Alan Shearer believes Liverpool can improve with one simple fix. The Premier League legend sees it happening soon, too.
Liverpool suffered an awful defeat on Sunday. Manchester City capitalised on a series of defensive errors, winning 4-1 and ending the Reds’ title hopes.
There will be no back-to-back title wins, it seems. It would certainly take a remarkable crash from City on top of a huge upturn at Liverpool.
Still, Liverpool need to figure out how to make that upturn happen regardless. Their top 4 hopes rely on it.
Alan Shearer thinks there’s an obvious quick-fix that helps Liverpool do just that, though. And it should happen before long.

“Something needs to change for the team to get its belief back, and putting [Jordan] Henderson back in his proper position would definitely help,” he wrote for the BBC.
“They signed two centre-backs – Preston’s Ben Davies and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak – on deadline day last week, so I would suggest putting at least one of them in there as soon as possible so Henderson can return to the centre of midfield.
“They need him there.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool need Henderson in midfield for a series of reasons that benefits pretty much everyone else on the team.
For one, getting him away from midfield means Fabinho can play alongside a natural centre-back. That should solidify Liverpool and help the Brazilian.
Then there’s what Henderson brings to midfield. He can operate as the defensive shield – something Liverpool sorely miss with Fabinho in the back four.
In turn, that allows the other midfielders to focus on what they do best. That could mean Thiago worrying more about what’s happening going forward and Gini Wijnaldum playing his more natural box-to-box role.
Because that’s the best available midfield, right? Everyone would agree on that while Fabinho is a defender. Yet, we’ve never actually seen it. Liverpool haven’t used Thiago – Henderson – Wijnaldum once.
But here’s the clearest benefit of them all for having Henderson in midfield – Liverpool haven’t lost with him there.
He is the only midfielder to remain undefeated while starting a game in midfield. Curtis Jones did also hold that record until Sunday (admittedly, things actually fell apart once he left the pitch).
Liverpool are clearly better with Henderson in midfield. Not just on paper, not just in theory, but their results back that up completely.
