Both Ben White and Yves Bissouma impressed against Liverpool on Wednesday. Reports link the duo with the Reds.
Liverpool suffered a pretty awful defeat on Wednesday. Brighton beat them 1-0 at Anfield, condemning them to a second successive home defeat.
And in truth, Liverpool were terrible, fully deserving their defeat and with very little positive to take away from the game.
But here’s a very minor silver lining – two players Liverpool supposedly want played well.
The Liverpool Echo named White as a genuine transfer target for the summer. Liverpool supposedly consider him to be a good fit for them.
And Wednesday did suggest there’s something in that. Although, the nature of the game makes it hard to judge.
Brighton sat deep and had just 30 per cent possession – a situation Liverpool rarely find themselves in. Still, White certainly played well.
He made three interceptions, for instance, which was the joint-third most on the pitch. No Liverpool player managed to dribble past him, either.
But that’s kind of it as far as notable contributions. White was far more of a cog in their system than a star man.
He helped keep a clean-sheet at Anfield, though – that will impress Liverpool.
ESPN claimed a little while ago that Bissouma was a summer target. He does feel like a natural replacement Gini Wijnaldum.
And this game showed that. Bissouma was one of the standout performers.
He won 100 per cent of his tackles and contributed a game-high five interceptions in midfield. No Liverpool played got past him, either, while Bissouma also completed the most passes for Brighton.
It was an all-around performance from Bissouma, then, and a very impressive one. If Liverpool were looking at him as a potential signing, this showing will only have them more interested.
We’d have preferred the win, really.
But Ben White and Yves Bissouma both playing well is promising, should Liverpool make moves in the summer. The latter, in particular, shone.
Bissouma shone against Liverpool last time out, actually. As we said, he looks like a fine replacement if Wijnaldum does leave in the summer.
And after this one, we definitely think he’s worth keeping an eye on.
