3 dribbles, 8 tackles; Yves Bissouma must have turned Liverpool heads

Yves Bissouma must have turned heads at Liverpool with his display last weekend. The Reds like the player, according to reports.

TalkSport claims Liverpool like the look of Yves Bissouma. So much, in fact, that they could make a move as soon as January.

The 24-year-old is an obvious replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, who could leave for free at the end of the season. And if that is the case, Bissouma will have impressed Liverpool last Saturday.

He put in the kind of performance they’re looking for.

Wijnaldum is a fairly unique midfielder in that he’s capable of playing completely different styles. He’s just as likely to be a combative shield in front of your defence as he is to carry the ball forward and threaten.

But for Liverpool, he’s more the former. His energy and willingness to sacrifice for the team play a huge part in the Reds’ system. Losing him will be a big blow.

Liverpool, then, would likely want to replace him with a similar versatile, energetic midfielder. And that’s what Bissouma could bring.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

The Malian isn’t someone who would create or score for Liverpool but he ticks nearly every other box. And the club saw that up close last Saturday.

Bissouma won eight tackles in the game – that wasn’t just the most but twice as many as anyone else. He did it at an 89% success rate, too, as he failed just once.

On the opposite side of the game, Bissouma completed three dribbles. He was one of only two players in the game to do this, but it gets better than that.

Bissouma attempted three dribbles and completed them all. In comparison, Danny Welbeck – the other player to complete three – attempted seven. Diogo Jota attempted the most for Liverpool (four) but only succeeded with one.

That kind of reliable efficiency appears elsewhere, too. Bissouma didn’t give the ball away with a bad touch once – in fact, it’s now four games since he did.

He also managed 88% pass completion – only Fabinho matched that in Red.

Altogether, you get a player who would clearly have a use at Anfield. Bissouma can physically dominate a midfield but he’s careful with the ball, making few mistakes.

That’s exactly what Liverpool will want to replace Wijnaldum. A player with energy, who can sacrifice for the team and win the midfield battle with and without the ball.

We won’t be surprised if the Reds pursue this one.
