Takumi Minamino has joined Southampton on loan for the rest of the season. The Japan international only joined Liverpool in January 2020.
In a surprise deal, Takumi Minamino joins Southampton on loan for the rest of the campaign.
There were no suggestions that Liverpool wanted to offload Minamino today but he’ll spend the rest of the season elsewhere. This comes just one year after his £7.25m arrival from RB Salzburg.
But Minamino has struggled to break in at Liverpool. He has just two Premier League starts this season, with his combined minutes reaching a tiny 289.
He’ll hopefully move far beyond that at Southampton as he looks to finally make his mark on Premier League football.

Interestingly, this comes on the same day Liverpool turned down another loan offer from Southampton. Per Sky Sports, the Saints wanted Neco Williams for the campaign.
Liverpool, though, need the Welshman as cover at right-back.
They got the green light for Minamino, however, and the 26-year-old will spend the rest of the season away from Liverpool.
What RTK has to say
We really did not see this coming.
It was barely after 9pm when we first heard this might happen. Before that, we didn’t see Minamino leaving the club, let alone that it could happen in just an hour or two.
But as he’s barely playing, it’s as understandable as it is surprising.
We do find it a little strange that Liverpool are willing to trim their numbers, though. We wonder if that has anything to do with Premier League registration requirements and possible plans there.
But the real positive here is just that Minamino should get a regular chance to show what he can do. If he performs well – and we do expect him to – then Liverpool either get a better player back or someone with increased value to sell on.
