Takumi Minamino could complete a shock loan move to Southampton, according to reports. The Japan international has only been at Anfield for one year.
This comes from the Athletic [21:08, 01/02]. They claim that Southampton hope to sign Takumi Minamino on loan from Liverpool.
This would happen very late in the day, with the transfer window closing at 11pm. Still, the Saints are apparently ‘excited’ at the prospect.
We don’t know much more just yet – but this one is a shock.
What RTK has to say
Genuinely, this one is a shock. Minamino only moved to Liverpool in January 2020.

But then, perhaps it shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone. Minamino just doesn’t play.
There’s clearly a very talented footballer in there, though. The 26-year-old just needs to click into place, finding his fit in English football.
Maybe this loan deal is genius, then. It’s one that could finally provide Minamino with the regular football he needs in order to find his feet.
That’s the hope, anyway. We like Minamino a lot, even if he doesn’t often show how good he is.
In fact, his best performance at Anfield remains the one he gave for RB Salzburg back in 2019.
While we’d be sad to see him depart the squad for the rest of the season, we will back him to shine down south. It could be the making of him.
The benefits are clear – if he’s good, then he can return to Liverpool a better player or secure a decent sale in the summer.
At the very least, he’ll return more-suited to Premier League football and Liverpool will have a better idea of what he can do.
Still, we really didn’t see Liverpool trimming their numbers today. We’ll be watching this one very closely.
